Those of us at midlife and beyond are far from the scrap heap. We are poised to invent an entirely new stage of life—the encore years—between the end of midlife and anything resembling old-fashioned retirement. … and in the process to revamp the nature of all preceding life stages, opening options for younger people who can make life decisions with the expectation of more than one bite of the apple.
– Marc Freedman, Founder and CEO, Encore.org, in the Forward to the Encore Career Handbook by Marci Alboher
The national Encore organization “is spearheading efforts to engage millions of people in later life as a vital source of talent to benefit society. … with the ultimate goal of creating a better future for young people and future generations.” Encore.org now has over 35 member organizations in its network, including Encore Tampa Bay.
Bevan Gray-Rogel, the founder of Encore Tampa Bay, is a national Encore fellow working closely with the Community Foundation in this area to grow Encore Tampa Bay to be a resource for midlife adults wishing to redefine their next phase of life.
Now Encore Tampa Bay is expanding to include a new component—ECO—Encore Connect Online—for midlife adults to learn from and with each other online as they explore their encore options, clarify personal direction, and become familiar with digital technologies as they are communicating and collaborating in the learning network.
Guess who is hosting and facilitating ECO? The Women’s Learning Studio!
Lisa and I are excited to be guiding this four month pilot online learning network that starts this week with an orientation on May 7th. In addition to leading the monthly same-time sessions in our WLS Studio online, we will offer a learning concierge service–much like a hotel concierge–to help ECO members find learning opportunities, develop skills to communicate and collaborate online, and share resources that they find with ECO peers. Readers can learn more about it by listening to this short audio recording and viewing this page on how to register.
ECO will connect encore seekers to like-minded peers on the Encore journey and do it from home or any convenient location with smartphones, tablets, or computers connected to the internet. No need to drive to a meeting or find a parking space. ECO members will talk with each other about their hopes and plans for the future in sessions convened online in a WLS Studio room. ECO members will learn about the internet and technologies to:
- Look for a job or a volunteer position
- Learn how employers are assessing the digital footprint of job applicants
- Learn what other people are doing to explore or connect to their encore
- Learn how to create their own online network with other groups of people
This series of 5 ninety-minute online sessions starts May 7th (Orientation Session) and only costs $25 (that’s less than the price of two movie tickets and a small box of popcorn). Take charge of your life and start now to build a bridge to your next adventure and make new friends doing it; Register NOW!
